Can my tire be patched?

Usually, if the hole is small and in the tread. A nail or screw in the part of the tire that touches the road can be repaired from the inside with a patch-plug, as long as the hole is no bigger than about a quarter inch.

A puncture in the sidewall or the shoulder can't be fixed safely. Neither can a tire that was driven flat long enough to chew up the inside. In those cases we'll show you why and price out a replacement.

Before you get here

If it's a slow leak, air it up and drive it over. Leave the nail in, because it's plugging the hole better than anything you'll find in the glovebox. If the tire is all the way flat, put the spare on first. Even a mile on a flat can turn a ten-minute repair into a new tire.

Slow leak with no nail?

Then it could be the bead where the tire meets the wheel, a tired valve stem, or corrosion on the rim. Cold mornings make it worse: tire pressure drops about one PSI for every ten degrees, which is why tire lights pop on all over Sevier County the first chilly week of fall.

Questions we get

Straight answers

Is a plug as good as a patch?

No. A plug pushed in from the outside is a roadside fix. The proper repair is a patch-plug installed from inside the tire, which seals the inner liner and fills the hole.

Can a sidewall puncture be repaired?

No. The sidewall flexes every time the tire turns, and a repair there won't hold. A tire with a sidewall puncture needs to be replaced.
